Skyscrapers, Robots and Forests: Get the Tokyo Experience Travel

Tokyo is one of the most exciting and advanced cities in the world. Visiting this incredible land of skyscrapers is like diving into the future and while many things feel familiar, there is also a sense of something completely and addictively ‘other’.

So with limited time, how can you possibly explore this place and do it justice? Well, you might start by learning some of the language. Do have a look at the minna no nihongo books, which provide a more holistic view of the language. Now, with your appetite for Japan warmed up, here are a few other things to explore.

Skyscrapers

With the striking backdrop of Mount Fuji, the skyscrapers in Tokyo are something to behold and many have observation decks so you can look out across the city too. The tallest is Tokyo Skytree with two observation decks, the first at 350m high and the second at 450m. It’s open every day from 8am to 10pm so you can view the city in sunshine or you can take in the views of the neon-clad buildings at night.

But, if you are practically inclined, you might be more interested in learning where the highest restaurants are so you can combine your culinary intrigue with an amazing view. If you have ever seen Lost in Translation and want to relive the movie for yourself, Park Hyatt is the one for you. However, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is the best spot for looking at Mount Fuji.

Robots

Tokyo is famous for it’s growing relationships with robots and it’s common for people to have a robot at home too. Indeed, you’re probably familiar with Pepper and Asimo even if robots aren’t really your thing. So, if unique cultural experience is on your perfect holiday list, you really should explore what the robots have to offer.

If you are particularly interested in Androids, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Miraikan, has a permanent exhibition exploring the question, ‘what is human?’ This exhibition is hands-on and covers a wide range of uses for robots as well as the way we interact. But honestly, you can find robots all over in Tokyo from hotels like Henn-na to banks.

Forests

Big city and bright lights don’t really shout forest but, in Japan, the forest is a really important part of urban living, mainly as an antidote. Forest bathing or Shinrin-Yoku, is a popular activity in Japan and has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and even reduce aches and pains. In other words, spending a couple of hours sitting or walking quietly in the forest is good for you.

After a few days of running around the city, spending some time with the trees is incredibly soothing. Somehow the chaos melts away and your breathing relaxes with your muscles. While most of the best forests are around an hour or more away by train, the Institute for Nature Study forms a green haven in the middle of the city.

However you approach Tokyo, this city will surprise you, and that’s why it is such a popular destination.
